Can Guinea Pigs Eat Red Peppers?

So we had red peppers for dinner tonight.

They were great, we had them with pasta and pesto and they were delicious. So when we were tidying up after dinner we had some left over and so decided to investigate whether I could give them to my guinea pig.

However before I put them out I took into account some of the considerations that others advised on red peppers

  • Red peppers are great for guinea pigs to eat as they contain a high amount of vitamin c. They don’t have as much vitamin c  as green peppers but are still very good for them.
  • It is best to give about a quarter of a pepper to a guinea pig
  • Red peppers do contain a high amount of sugar, so do bear that in mind.
  • Don’t confuse red bell peppers and hot red peppers, they are very different. We are talking about bell peppers here.
  • Red peppers also hold a lot of water so can cause some bloated-ness in guinea pigs if they have too many
  • They can also cause diarrhoea if they have too much
  • Red peppers tend to be sweeter than green peppers.
